For the first time since April 1, the Louisiana Department of Health is identifying all of the state’s nursing homes with COVID-19 cases.

Nearly 40 percent of the state’s COVID-19 deaths were residents of nursing homes or other long-term care facilities, but a lack of transparency and changing reporting standards from facilities and the state department of health has left residents’ loved ones in the dark.

GOP Balks As State Warns Of Possible Medicaid Cuts

The state is sending out 37,000 letters to Medicaid recipients across Louisiana today, warning them their coverage could run out July 1 if cuts to the state budget aren’t restored.

“We’re struggling to find ways to pay for health care and balance it against the other needs of the state. The fiscal note says this could generate as much as 100-million in a given year.”

Ascension Parish Representative Tony Bacala said, as he presented his bill requiring the Louisiana Department of Health to move to managed care programs for those with long-term health needs on Wednesday.


On Nov. 4, Louisiana voters are being asked — as they were in 2012 — to decide whether to protect nursing homes from future budget cuts.
