Consider Being Green When You Garden

I've always thought of gardening as a green activity, but there's an argument that some of the things we do when we garden are not necessarily as green as we might think. Consider our use of gas-powered equipment, over-application of fertilizers, and careless use of pesticides.

There are things we can do to keep our gardening efforts more sustainable with less of an environmental impact.

One could argue October to be the most critical month for lawn maintenance. Work you put in now may not show immediate results, but that work will create a healthier lawn in the spring and summer to come.

This is the time of year summer weeds begin to finish up for the season. Simultaneously, winter weeds are beginning to emerge.


Know the difference between types of herbicide

It's important to always use the right tool for the right job. Herbicides can be considered a tool in our garden. As gardeners it's important to understand the groupings of herbicides in the garden.

Pre-emergent herbicides take effect on the plant before it emerges, usually before the seed has a chance to germinate. Corn gluten is an organic pre-emergent herbicide.

It seems we have more than our share of insects, diseases, and weeds here in Louisiana. This comes true particularly during mid to late summer. It's important to remember that the use of pesticides, such as insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides, is only one way of controlling these pests. There are other techniques gardeners can use to help prevent the severe infestations that make use of pesticides necessary.
