The LSU lakes are sick. They’re slowly filling with harmful nutrients and sediment, without an effective way to drain.

“If we do nothing, they will become the swamps that they were,” says landscape architect Jeffrey Carbo. With funding provided by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF), Carbo's firm, Jeffrey Carbo Landscape Architects, helped create the Lakes Master Plan.

Their solution is to dredge. But not everyone likes that plan.

Out of Prison, Counseling Keeps Mental Health in Check

While Chiffonda Hampton was serving three years in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, she met Tonja Myles, a Peer Support Specialist with Capital Area Human Services. Myles was offering wellness classes to inmates with mental illness. Those classes taught Hampton how to cope with the anger of being abused as a child and basic life skills she had never learned before. Now that Hampton is out of prison, she continues to check in with Myles at CAHS.

Today's first guest is the former Governor of Pennsylvania Ed Rendell. He and Jim discuss Rendell's early career in sports, the Philadelphia Phillies, politics, Common Core, and the state of the Democratic party in America.

Capitol blogger C.B. Forgotston calls in as the day's second guest and he and Jim discuss the growing controversy surrounding Superintendent Mike Edmonson of the Louisiana State Police Department and his involvement in Senate Bill 294 by Senator Neil Riser which gives Edmonson and at least one other trooper up to $30,000 in extra retirement benefits.

Also, Mukul Verma of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation joins Jim in studio to close out the day's show, and he brings with him the recent City Stats from the annual survey done on East Baton Rouge Parish.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation released its annual City Stats report Monday. The survey, which looks at over 70 indicators, revealed some surprising answers this year.

Erin Monroe Wesley, C.O.O. of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, discusses her group's legislative agenda for this year and other matters.

Local businessman Steve Myers and Paul Naquin, a resident concerned about occupants of some of Myers' rental properties in his neighborhood. Myers recently won a court case on the matter and they'll talk with Jim about it.

Dinaw Mengestu Wins Ernest Gaines Literary Award

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation has announced the winner of this year's Ernest Gaines Award for Literary Excellence, which is designed to inspire and recognize rising African-American writers in honor of the renowned Louisiana author.

Dinaw Mengestu will accept the award for his novel, How to Read the Air. WRKF's Tegan Wendland talked to him about the challenges of writing fiction and the underlying message in his novel.
