Sean Payton, the New Orleans Saints head coach, is set to retire, according to an announcement on Jan. 25, 2022.

Saints head coach Sean Payton is stepping away from the position he's held for 16 years, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The 58-year-old coach helped the New Orleans Saints capture the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 2009 and led the team to eight playoff berths. Payton has been New Orleans’ head coach since 2006 and will retire as one of the most successful head coaches in Saints — and the league’s — history.

2021 was a challenging year for the Saints and Payton. The team dealt with the retirement of Drew Brees, multiple injuries at quarterback and a relocation for several weeks due to Hurricane Ida. But the team battled to a 9-8 record and just missed making the playoffs.

Rumors about Payton’s uncertain future with the organization gained momentum in recent days when Saints owner Gayle Benson was asked by reporters about the coach’s status.

“You know, who knows? We’ll find out soon enough, I guess,” she responded in an interview.

On Tuesday, the news broke when an NFL Network Report said Payton confirmed his eventual departure.
