Heat Advisories Issued Across Gulf Coast With Power, Water Still Out After Hurricane Ida

Heat advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for southeast Louisiana and portions of south and southeast Mississippi.

Heat index values are expected to reach up to 105 on Tuesday and up to 106 on Wednesday. Advisories will remain in effect from 10am to 5pm on both days.

The announcement comes after what officials are calling catastrophic damage from Ida, which made landfall Sunday near Port Fourchon as a major Category 4 hurricane. Entergy reports 793,840 locations are still without power across Louisiana as of 10.45 a.m. Tuesday. The power company is expected to provide more details on how long the lights will be out later on Tuesday.

Boil water advisories have also been issued across southeastern Louisiana following the hurricane. Residents in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish are being asked to conserve water to prevent sewer systems from backing up.

The NWS in New Orleans encourages residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, create paper fans, find shade, and cover windows. Ice is available in St. Bernard Parish.
