This week on The Reading Life: Susan talks with Louisiana State University history professors Nancy Isenberg and Andrew Burstein, authors of "The Problem of Democracy: The Presidents Adams Confront the Cult of Personality.”

  • Lacy Johnson signs her essay collection, “The Reckonings,” Tuesday, June 4, at 6 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Marybeth Lima discusses and signs her book, “Adventures of a Louisiana Birder: One Year, Two Wings, Three Hundred Species,” Wednesday, June 5, at 6 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Jane Trowbridge Bertrand discusses and signs “You Started what After 60? Highpointing Across America,” Wednesday, June 5, at 6 p.m. at Octavia Books.
  • Kim Vodicka and Lizzie Wann are the featured readers at Blood Jet Poetry Series, Wednesday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Dragonfly, 3921 St. Claude Ave.
  • And don’t forget to check out the National World War 2 Museum’s web site for the events scheduled for the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a daylong celebration of discussions, films, and celebration. It’s nationalww2museum.org.
  • Martin Walker signs “The Body in the Well: A Bruno, Chief of Police Novel,” Thursday, June 6, at 6 p.m. at Garden District Book Shop.
  • Earl Higgins, discusses and signs 100 Catholic Things To Do Before You Die,” Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
  • The Octavia Books Science Fiction Book Club discusses “Empire Star,” by Samuel R. Delaney, Saturday, June 8, at 10:30 at Octavia Books.
  • Bar Redux at 801 Poland, presents Writer's Gumbo: A Celebration & Sharing of Words, hosted by James Germain, with featured writers Jonathan Penton, Briana Augustus, Joaquin Emiliano, Kathleen Conlon, Christopher Hefferman, Nicole Eiden, Russell Mercado and others. That’s Sunday, June 9, at 8 p.m.

Before becoming the host of The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She is the vice president for literary programming of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, she serves on the board of directors of the New Orleans Public Library, and she is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community.
