An Orleans Levee District police officer shot a driver and passenger on Lakeshore Drive Sunday afternoon during a stop.

After a caller reported a reckless driver in a parking lot near the lakefront, the New Orleans Police Department dispatched the Levee District officer to investigate. An eyewitness told the Advocate the driver was doing donuts.

As the officer approached the car, the driver allegedly charged toward him. The officer shot at the vehicle and hit the two people.

Emergency services transported them to a nearby hospital for their injuries. Neither the NOPD or Levee Authority could comment on their condition. The police officer was not hurt in the encounter.

The officer is currently on active suspension while NOPD’s Force Investigation Team investigates the incident.
