Don't Waste Your Leaves: Composting

LSU AgCenter

For a full year, trees work diligently to pull nutrients from deep in the soil to develop the current year's foliage, which they they drop in the fall. But all to often gardeners and homeowners rake these leaves only to bag them up and put them on the side of the road.

These bags of brown gold will then go to a landfill to serve no other purpose. Lawn trimmings and other compostable material compose 28% per material put into landfills. It's an alarming amount of material that could otherwise be utilized.

Using fallen leaves in the garden is one of the easiest, cheapest, and eco-friendly solutions gardeners can employ in their own yard. Gather leaves by blowing, ranking, or using a collecting attachment on your lawnmower.
