Winter storm update: Louisiana schools announce reopening plans

Many schools announced reopening plans on Thursday after a winter storm shut down campuses across the state.

The storm dumped several inches of snow on parts of the state Monday. Most schools in the affected areas will remain closed until Monday, but some schools plan to reopen on Friday. Some districts and colleges are still assessing conditions and will make an announcement in the coming days.


Orleans Parish

All NOLA Public Schools will remain closed on Friday and reopen on Monday.


Jefferson Parish

All Jefferson Parish schools will be closed through Friday. The district will share updates on its reopening plans on its website.


On Tuesday morning, residents of New Orleans and Baton Rouge woke up to a winter wonderland with rare snow coating the ground.

East Baton Rouge Parish

All East Baton Rouge public schools will be closed through Friday.

"We are looking forward to starting fresh together and returning to normalcy on Monday, January 27, 2025," the district said in an announcement on its website.


St. Tammany Parish

All St. Tammany Parish public schools are set to reopen on Friday.


St. Bernard Parish

All St. Bernard Parish public schools will be closed through Friday.

"We can’t wait to see everyone back on campus on Monday, January 27th," the district said on its website.


St. Charles Parish

All St. Charles Parish public schools opened with a three-hour delay start time on Friday.


St. John the Baptist Parish

All St. John the Baptist Parish public schools will be closed through Friday.


Washington Parish

All public schools will be closed through Friday. The district plans to reopen schools on Monday.


There are a number of steps you can take to prepare for the storm, from having a plan in place in the event of a power outage, and dripping faucets to prevent pipes from freezing.

LSU

The campus is set to reopen Friday. All classes, offices and events will return to normal operations.


Tulane University

The campus reopened on Friday.


The University of New Orleans

The school plans to resume normal operations on Friday.


Loyola University

The school expects to resume in-person classes and operations on Monday.


The University of Louisiana at Lafayette 

The college will continue to operate remotely on Friday. In-person classes will resume on Monday.


With temperatures dipping below the freezing mark, city and parish officials have started opening warming shelters around Louisiana.

Southern University and A&M College

Campuses on the Baton Rouge landmass will be closed through Friday. In-person classes are expected to resume on Monday.


Nicholls State University 

The college will remain in remote operation until further notice. Students and staff should monitor email, the university website and social media channels for updates.


Nunez Community College 

The school will continue to operate remotely on Friday. Students and employees in need of additional assistance should contact their instructors or supervisors.


Louisiana Christian University

The campus will be closed through Friday, with classes continuing online. In-person classes are expected to resume on Monday.


Xavier University

The campus will remain closed through Friday with classes continuing online. Students and staff should monitor email, the university website and social media channels for updates.
