Thousands Feared Dead in New Orleans

In New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin says Hurricane Katrina has taken the lives of hundreds, at minimum, but most likely thousands of people.

The federal government has mobilized one of the largest relief and response efforts in U.S. history. Efforts to repair the breaches of the levees and floodwalls have been unsuccessful.
