On Friday, Governor John Bel Edwards signed a proclamation closing all public schools in the state for one month to help slow the spread of coronavirus in the state. Schools are scheduled to resume instruction April 13, unless state officials decide otherwise.
In the meantime, many parents in New Orleans have been left wondering where they’ll find childcare, or how their children will be fed, if not at school.
Answers to the latter are starting to take shape. According to a press release from NOLA Public Schools, a citywide child nutrition program will be available starting Monday, March 23. Details on the citywide program have not been made known yet, but some schools are taking steps immediately.
Beginning Monday (March 16), 7 schools will offer grab-and-go meals to students for both breakfast and lunch. Those schools include: Audubon, Harriet Tubman, Morris Jeff Community School, Paul Habans, Pierre A. Capdau, ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron, and ReNEW Schaumburg.
Several other schools will follow suit on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the statement.
The meals will be made available to anyone under the age of 18, regardless of whether that person attends that school, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. A full list of schools with meals available for pick-up can be found here.
Note: infant nutrition is not available.
