On Wednesday, Gov. John Bel Edwards praised protesters and law enforcement officers across the state for avoiding the violent altercations that have marked demonstrations elsewhere in the country.
Thousands of Louisianans have taken to the streets to protest the police killing of George Floyd. Floyd, a black man, died of asphyxiation after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.
Edwards, who comes from a law enforcement family, described the incident as, “unfortunate, unnecessary and illegal.”
President Donald Trump has called on the nation's governors to crack down on violent protests. In many cities across the country, large crowds have been met with tear gas, rubber bullets and national guard troops, but not in Louisiana.
Edwards said he “expects we will continue to see peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations and protests,” and does not anticipate calling up the National Guard.
