U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy is headed back to Washington to represent Louisiana's 6th Congressional District.
The Republican from Baton Rouge coasted to re-election for a third term Tuesday night, winning about 80 percent of the vote.
A couple hundred Cassidy supporters came out to his watch party at the Renaissance hotel in Baton Rouge.
Ray Cothe was there. He's a contractor from Baton Rouge and he said he supported the incumbent because he thinks Cassidy just really gets the people of the 6th District.
"All the people. Small business. Big business. The Medicaid people. Everyone. He really understands and has a feel for what he thinks is best for all these people in representing them," said Cothe.
Dee Alberty, also of Baton Rouge, said she voted for Cassidy because she thinks he's out to do the right thing.
"He has a servant's heart and for the whole spectrum of the community he wants to do his very best and will work very hard to make that happen," said Alberty.
When Cassidy took the stage around 9 p.m., he spoke about the two very different paths America faces going forward.
"If you will there's the path of greater freedom or there's one of we seceding our responsibly for how we live our lives to our American president. Now, me, I'm a freedom guy," said Cassidy.
Cassidy also reaffirmed his opposition to Obamacare and his commitment to cutting the national debt.
Cassidy's long-shot opponents, Libertarian Rufus Craig and no-party candidate Richard Torregano, both received about 10 percent of the vote.
