Treasury Department holds Unclaimed Property Awareness Day at Mall

Louisiana's Treasury Department holds onto unclaimed property for citizens. Last Saturday, they had an awareness day at the mall.

When you go to the mall, you're usually planning to spend money. What if you could find money, instead? That's what mall-goers like Donald Marx did on Saturday.

MARX: "One hundred and eighty-seven dollars and fifty cents."

He was one of over eight hundred people who found money at the Louisiana Unclaimed Property Awareness Day last Saturday. State Treasurer John Kennedy explains what unclaimed property is:

KENNEDY: "It's old bank accounts, stocks, mutual funds, utility deposits, apartment deposits, tax refunds. Believe it or not, we get a lot of uncashed payroll checks."
