FEMA Opens Nearly 20 Disaster Recovery Centers After Issac

It's been two weeks since Hurricane Isaac hit Louisiana and FEMA has since opened 18 disaster recovery centers across the state.

A center opened last week in Ascension Parish and FEMA Spokesman Ray Perez said about 300 people have so far been helped there. That's a small percentage of the 24-hundred parish residents who have applied for individual assistance, including grants for temporary housing, home repairs and uninsured property losses.

Perez said many people have applied for the program online but he says the centers are a convenient one-stop shop.

"Whatever questions they have, it doesn't have to be about FEMA, but if there's a state agency they need to talk to about insurance or food stamps or that kind of stuff, then they can get those questions answered," said Perez.

As of Thursday, a total of almost $55-billion dollar in assistance has been approved for over 27-thousand individual applicants statewide.

The recovery centers will remain open seven days a week until further notice.
