The House Education Committee has agreed to a proposal that would delay the disciplinary effects of a new teacher evaluation system for another year while school districts work out any kinks.
The evaluation system was pushed three years ago by Gov. Bobby Jindal and backed by lawmakers to start this year.
It will grade public school teachers partly on student test scores, tying at least half of a teacher's review to students' improvement on standardized tests.
Teachers with poor reviews will get intensive assistance. If they don't improve, they could be fired.
The committee agreed Wednesday to a compromise that would let the new system be used this year, but without rewards or penalties until the 2014-15 school year.
