In Louisiana and across the country church bells were rung at 9:30 a.m. this morning in memory of the women and children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT a week ago.

Gov. Bobby Jindal called for Louisianians to pause for a moment of mourning in response to a request from Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy.

As elsewhere, the tragedy has sparked renewed debate here over gun control.

Shreveport  Rep. Barbara Norton has asked for a statewide committee to craft safety legislation. She says she’d like to see a law to make gun owners keep their firearms secure at all times.

That could be trumped by a recently passed state constitutional amendment requiring strict scrutiny be applied to any attempt to restrict gun rights.

Meanwhile, gun purchases have reportedly spiked in Baton Rouge.
