Freshwater flooding is typically a result of excessive rainfall. Salt water flooding is generally limited to coastal areas as a result of stormwater surges from hurricanes. Freshwater flooding affects plants by saturating the soil. Plant roots need oxygen from space in the soil, and saturating the soil deprives the roots of oxygen.
