September is an odd month for planting the vegetable garden. It's right between the warm season and the cold season. What do we do?

This is a transition month. This is when we plant some warm season vegetables and some cool season vegetables.

In the early part of the month, we can plant transplants of tomatoes and peppers. We can also plant squash, cucumber, pole beans, snap beans from seed.

Nothing more frustrating than fruits of labor lost to disease and pests. Though the spring has been pleasant, warm days and cool nights contribute to the growth and spread of many diseases that can attack the vegetables in our gardens.

If you have vegetables such as cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and melons, then you might notice fuzzy white material growing on the leaves and growing to spread. Two types of mildews affect vegetables: downy mildew and powdery mildew. Powdery mildew grows during hot and dry weather. Downy mildews thrive in cool, wet periods.

Some of the most popular vegetables planted in home vegetable gardens belong to the cucumber family. Members of this family are called cucurbits. Many from this family can be planted this month, including summer squash, winter squash, mirliton, pumpkin, gourd, gugutka, watermelon, cantaloupe, cushaw, luffa, and, of course, cucumber.

All of these vegetables produce vines that crawl along the ground or climb. Summer squash is the exception as the vines are more bush-like.

One thing to remember is that both sexes of flowers grow on the same plant, so you don't need multiple plants.

Avoid using insecticides on your flowers in the morning, which is when your pollinators will be most active.

These days, gardeners mostly purchase vegetable transplants at local nurseries for their spring plantings. Wonderful transplants of vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, squash, and cucumbers.

But you know this limits you to just those cultivars the nursery chooses to carry. And this is really a small choice considering how many cultivars are out there. Look at any seed catalogue and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Raising your own transplants is not overly difficult and it is a fun and rewarding activity for home gardeners.

Many cucurbits -- vegetables that belong to the cucumber family -- can be planted in April.
