Lakefront Airport Celebrates 85 Years

February marks the 85th anniversary of the opening of New Orleans Lakefront Airport. The facility served as New Orleans' major commercial airport for 12 years, until the opening of Moisant Airport in 1944, which later became Louis Armstrong International Airport.

The facility was severely damaged in Katrina and has just recently been restored to its original Art Deco grandeur. Karl Lengel spoke with Wilma Heaton, chair of the Lakefront Management Authority, which oversees the facility, about the history and renovation of the airport.
