As cities across the nation grapple with their response to mass uprisings following the police killing of George Floyd, advocates and organizers in New Orleans continue to take to the streets this week to demand policy reform.
Advocates are celebrating the Supreme Court ruling on Monday providing workplace protections for trans workers, but say trans people in America still face systemic discrimination, especially trans Black people. This Friday also marks Juneteenth, a major national holiday marking the end of slavery in 1865, when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were free.
All week long, rallies and actions are planned to demand police accountability, defunding the NOPD, support for essential workers, and protections for people who are transgender.
