A fourth child in Louisiana has died from Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), a disease associated with COVID-19.
The Louisiana Department of Health reported the death on Aug. 10. It did not release the age of the child or any other details related to the child’s specific case.
MIS-C is a health condition in people under 21-year-old that causes organs — including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal organs — to become inflamed and fail, the department reported. It’s believed to be related to COVID-19.
Louisiana is seeing a spike in the disease, with confirmed cases rising to 44 among infants as young as 1 month old to teens up to 19. Symptoms can range from a fever to abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes or extreme tiredness.
Last week, a study from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 570 children in 14 states had contracted MIS-C and 10 had died. The study did not use data from Louisiana.
It found Hispanic children were about eight times more likely to be hospitalized from the disease, and Black children were five times more likely to be hospitalized from the disease, compared to white children.
