The number of people reported dead of COVID-19 in 24 hours in Louisiana took by far its biggest jump yet Tuesday afternoon. Another 129 people have died, the Louisiana Department of Health reports.
As a reminder: not all deaths reported in 24 hours occurred in those 24 hours.
In all, 1,013 people have died of COVID-19 in Louisiana.
"That’s 1,013 people who are someone’s mother, father, sister, or brother or child or aunt or uncle. They are our neighbors, friends and coworkers," Gov. John Bel Edwards said in a press release. "They are more than just a number on a report or graph, and as our fellow Louisianans, we all grieve alongside their families."
When people die of COVID-19, it usually happens 11.2 days after symptoms appear, according to the press release.
In Orleans Parish, 276 people have died. In Jefferson Parish, 210 people have died. In East Baton Rouge Parish: 58.
As of today, 63 percent of the people who have died of COVID-19 in Louisiana were 70 or older — 641 total. And as we reported yesterday, 59 percent were black and nearly 60 percent had hypertension.
Other prevelant comorbidities include diabetes (38.1 percent), chronic kidney disease (22.5 percent), obesity (22.6 percent) and cardiac disease (20.71 percent).
Thirty percent of the people who have died were white. As for other age groups: 18 percent were ages 60 to 69, 9 percent were ages 50 to 59, 4 percent were ages 40 to 49, 2 percent were ages 30 to 39, and .5 percent were ages 18 to 29. One person under age 18 has died.
There are now 21,518 known cases of COVID-19 in Louisiana, across all 64 parishes. State and commercial labs have completed 118,442 tests.
There are 5,718 known cases in Orleans Parish, 5,188 known cases in Jefferson Parish and 1,295 known cases in East Baton Rouge Parish.
There has been some improvement: There are 1,977 people in hospitals, 436 of whom are on ventilators. Thats 157 fewer people in hospitals and 25 fewer people on ventilators than yesterday. That's the biggest drop in the number of people in hospitals yet, and the third biggest drop in the number of people on ventilators.
The state health department offered a new look at those numbers today:
