Lawmakers withdrew more than $140 million from the state's emergency fund during the recently ended legislative session. They dedicated the money to patch budget holes, fill deficits, and in some cases pay for pet projects. According to the Associated Press, only a few million dollars now remain the emergency fund. Gov. Bobby Jindal backed the withdrawal. His administration says other dollars are available to immediately cope with a storm if one comes.
Critics are concerned about nearly depleting the emergency fund in the start of what is forecast to be a busier than normal hurricane season, and with the largest ever Gulf oil spill off the coast.
