The Louisiana Federation of Teachers and two local teacher unions have filed a lawsuit, seeking to block the newly-enacted law called the "Red Tape Reduction Act." The law allows school districts to ask the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education - or BESE - for waivers from certain state laws and regulations.

LFT president Steve Monaghan says waivers are outside of BESE's authority. "BESE is a policy making, administrative body," Monaghan says, "It is not a law making body. It is not a body that was ever set up to choose how laws would be enforced, or where they would be enforced."

The suit seeks to have the new law thrown out and prohibit BESE from
    issuing waivers.
