LSU has instructed its deans and department heads to start extending the non-reappointments given to dozens of non-tenured faculty last winter. That means those jobs are secure through the summer of 2011.

Last January, LSU gave notice to over 230 non-tenure-track and non-tenured instructors that their jobs would end in January 2011.

University spokesman Herb Vincent says the notices were needed at the time because LSU didn't know how deep budget cuts would go this year, "Now that we do we can plan better for the immediate future, but we still have the drastic cuts that may be coming to us for fiscal year ‘12."

Vincent says an increase in student enrollment also helped keep instructors on the job. He says many instructors will be notified their non-reappointment will go into effect in August of next year. Vincent hopes instructors will stick with LSU through these uncertain times.
