4 foreign languages will be cut from Louisiana State University's offerings, as part of budget cuts. The head of the Foreign Languages and Literatures department confirmed the elimination Tuesday. Courses in Russian, Japanese, Portuguese and Swahili will not be offered in the Spring.

The faculty members who teach the subjects will be laid off in January. 14 faculty members will be out, about a quarter of the department's faculty.

In May LSU eliminated the bachelor's degree programs in Latin and German. Out of the 4 new programs being cut, none offered bachelor's degrees.

LSU will only offer foreign language degrees in French and Spanish. Some classes will still be available in several other languages.
