Louisiana voters will again have all candidates to consider on one ballot, starting in 2012. Governor Jindal signed into law a bill returning Louisiana to open primary elections for congressional seats. That means Democratic and Republican candidates will appear on the same primary ballot. Currently, the state runs a closed-party primary, meaning two separate primaries, one for Republicans and one for Democrats.
Baton Rouge Rep. Hunter Greene sponsored that bill. He says voters don't care what letter appears behind a candidate's name, instead, "they focus on the individual and whether or not they feel like they can trust that individual."
Greene says open primaries will save the state $13 million in election costs every other year.
Louisiana has only gone through one Congressional election cycle on a close primary system.
