The East Baton Rouge Parish school system is replacing its first-come first-serve registration for prekindergarten with a lottery for schools where demand outstrips supply.

Parents of 3 and 4-year-old children can apply from Jan. 23-27 for one of nearly 2,000 slots in fall 2012 prekindergarten classes. Bobby Robertson, director of prekindergarten for the school system, says there won't be any advantage to camping out in line.

Last year, parents began camping out in front of Shenandoah Elementary 24 hours ahead of time in hope of signing up their children for one of 20 openings at a school that won a national excellence award in 2006. Some lost their position when sheriff's deputies ordered everyone to leave and return early in the morning.
